The Skin Flora, Lipid Barrier, and Acid Mantle are the three main components of your skin's outermost defense systems.
Microbiota protection: your Skin Flora consists of a community of good bacteria to fight off bad bacteria.
Chemical protection: your Acid Mantle is acidic by nature (pH 4.5 -5.5) and acts as a barricade to alkaline contaminants.
Physical protection: your Lipid Barrier is your skin's natural fats and is found in the outermost layer of the epidermis, known as the Stratum Corneum. This layer not only contains lipids, but also dead skin cells (corneocytes) which form a protective physical barrier.

All of the above forms your Skin Barrier. Its job is to protect the 3 main delicate layers beneath (epidermis > dermis > hypodermis) by keeping moisture within the skin and keeping environmental stressors out.

VISUALISE IT.
Think of the Skin Barrier as a brick wall where skin cells act as bricks, lipids act as cement keeping the bricks together, the Acid Mantle being the cement on the wall, and the Skin Flora acting as the wall paint.
A wall with a strong structure will not only shield against harmful stuff from outside, if it has a nice cement -and paint job, it will also look better.

REPAIR & CARE.
If your wall is broken, damaged, has some loose bricks, or if the cement and paint is flaking off, you need to repair it.
Possible reasons why your Skin Barrier (wall) is damaged: excessive cleansing and over-exfoliating strip your Skin Barrier from its Skin Flora (paint), Acid Mantle (outer cement), and natural lipids (cement that keeps bricks together). This allows moisture to escape from the skin and irritants to enter.

DRY CEMENT CRACKS.
Natural production of skin lipids decreases with age. But we can replace the lipids by simply applying them to our skin! Just like a crack or hole in a wall can be fixed, your Skin Barrier can be repaired by ‘skin-identical’ lipids that will replace the ones we lost due to aging and other damages and continue supporting and protecting our Skin Barrier.

LIPID LOVE.
